A partial discharge detector is not a commodity: it is the instrument your maintenance team will rely on for years to find insulation defects early. The supplier choice matters as much as the instrument choice. This checklist distils what to evaluate before committing to a PD detector supplier.
The 8-point supplier checklist
1. Technology coverage
Partial discharge appears in different forms on different assets – surface discharge on switchgear (TEV), airborne ultrasound from tracking (ultrasonic), pulses on cables (HFCT), internal discharge in GIS (UHF). A supplier that covers all four technologies can advise the right measurement for each asset instead of pushing one method.
2. Manufacturing substance
Confirm the supplier manufactures its own sensors and instruments. Look for its own patents, software copyrights and engineering team. A manufacturer controls quality and can support customisation; a reseller cannot.
3. Standards and credentials
Beyond ISO certificates, check domain involvement: participation in power-industry or national standards is a strong signal of engineering depth. Verify national high-tech status and any standard-drafting roles claimed.
4. Calibration and measurement traceability
Ask how calibration is performed, what references are used, and how often instruments should be recalibrated. A clear calibration path matters for repeatable, comparable measurements across patrols.
5. Documentation quality
Review the manual, datasheets and application guidance before purchase. For teams without a local service presence, the documentation is the primary support channel – it must be complete and usable in English.
6. Training and onboarding
Confirm what training is included: operator training on measurement points, interpretation of results and report generation. Good training converts a purchased instrument into an internal capability.
7. OEM/ODM and customisation
Distributors and contractors often need private-label or custom variants. Clarify the OEM/ODM process, minimum quantities, lead times and documentation support.
8. After-sales and support model
Clarify warranty, spare parts, remote troubleshooting and the manufacturer’s policy for customers without local service coverage. Equipment-based inspection works without an on-site team when the supplier’s training and documentation are strong – confirm that model before buying.

- Shortlist 3-5 suppliers against the checklist in a scoring table.
- Request a live demonstration or field trial on representative assets.
- Ask for references from utilities or contractors in comparable markets.
- Run a pilot order to validate quality, documentation and communication before scaling.
