Switchgear and transformers
PV plants step up power through transformers and connect through MV switchgear. Insulation defects and loose connections here take down large blocks of generation.
Cable circuits
MV cable runs between the collection system, transformers and the substation are exposed to installation stress, heat and water ingress – a prime source of PD and premature failure.
Connections and terminations
Busbar joints, cable terminations and transformer bushings develop hot spots and discharge under sustained tropical load.

- Infrared acoustic imaging instrument – one-pass thermal and acoustic survey of switchgear, transformers, busbars and terminations; locates hot connections and discharge in the same sweep.
- Handheld PD detector with TEV and ultrasonic sensors – for switchgear panels, cable boxes and termination inspection without outages.
- HFCT clamps – PD checks on transformer grounding and cable earth connections.
- Cable oscillating wave test set – acceptance testing of new MV cable circuits and diagnosis of operating cables.
Testing at commissioning and in operation
Commissioning
Prove new MV cables with oscillating wave testing, and survey switchgear and transformers thermally and acoustically during initial energisation. Establish the baseline register for the plant’s life.
Operation
Run periodic live-line surveys on a schedule matched to the tropical environment – more frequent in the hot and wet seasons. Post-storm surveys catch damage to outdoor equipment early.
Predictive maintenance
Trend survey results per asset: rising PD or hot-spot values move an asset into the maintenance plan before failure, protecting generation availability and revenue.
