Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are expanding across Southeast Asia and the Middle East – paired with solar plants, providing frequency regulation and supporting grid stability. A BESS plant contains more than battery racks: it has MV switchgear, step-up transformers, cable circuits and power conversion equipment, all of which must be proven at commissioning and kept reliable in operation.
Where failures develop in a BESS plant
Switchgear and transformers
The MV switchgear and transformers connecting the BESS to the grid carry frequent charge/discharge duty cycles. Insulation defects and loose connections here take the plant offline.
MV cable circuits
Cable runs between the converter, transformers and the substation are exposed to installation stress and temperature cycling. PD activity at joints and terminations is the early warning.
Power conversion connections
Converter and inverter connections, busbars and terminations develop hot spots under sustained operation.
The inspection set for a BESS plant
- Infrared acoustic imaging instrument – one-pass thermal and acoustic survey of switchgear, transformers, busbars and connections.
- Handheld PD detector with TEV and ultrasonic sensors – switchgear panels, cable boxes and terminations, without outages.
- HFCT clamps – PD checks on transformer grounding and cable earth connections.
- Cable oscillating wave test set – acceptance testing of new MV cables and periodic diagnosis.
Commissioning and operation
Commissioning
Prove new MV cables with oscillating wave testing, survey switchgear and transformers thermally and acoustically during initial energisation, and record baselines in the asset register.
Operation
Run periodic live-line surveys matched to the duty cycle – more frequent where charge/discharge cycling is heavy. Trend readings per asset; rising PD or hot-spot values move an asset into the maintenance plan.
Post-event checks
After fault trips or extreme weather, a targeted survey of the affected circuits catches developing damage early.
