Electric vehicle charging is scaling rapidly across Southeast Asia and the Middle East – from highway fast-charging stations to large fleet depots. Every charging site is a small electrical plant: an MV or LV feeder, a transformer, switchgear, and dozens of high-current connections carrying power for hours at a time. Keeping that infrastructure reliable is the job of live-line inspection instruments.
Where failures develop at charging sites
Feeder and switchgear
The feeder supplying a charging hub and its switchgear carry sustained load with sharp peaks when multiple vehicles charge simultaneously. Loose connections and insulation defects show up as hot spots and partial discharge.
Transformers
Site transformers step power down for the charging equipment. Overload and harmonic currents stress insulation and connections.
High-current connections
Busbars, terminations and cable connections in charging cabinets run hot under sustained charge current. Thermal imaging finds the hot joints before they fail.
Long feeder cables
Fast-charging sites are often fed by dedicated cable circuits. PD at joints and terminations in these circuits is the early sign of developing failure.
The inspection set for charging infrastructure
- Infrared acoustic imaging instrument – one-pass thermal and acoustic survey of switchgear, transformers, busbars and charging cabinet connections.
- Handheld PD detector with TEV and ultrasonic sensors – switchgear panels, cable boxes and terminations, without disconnecting load.
- HFCT clamps – PD checks on transformer and cable ground connections.
- Cable oscillating wave test set – acceptance testing of new feeder circuits and periodic cable diagnosis.
Commissioning and operation
Commissioning
Prove new feeder cables with oscillating wave testing, and survey switchgear and connections thermally during initial load build-up. Record baselines per site.
Operation
Charging sites with round-the-clock operation rarely allow outages. Periodic live-line surveys – thermal and acoustic – fit maintenance windows and repeat on a schedule matched to utilisation.
Load-driven checks
Survey at peak charging hours where possible – thermal issues are most visible under maximum load.
