Passive Wireless Temperature Monitoring White Paper: Switchgear, Cable & Transformer Hotspot Sensing

Overheating is the most common and hidden precursor of electrical equipment failure. HUWOR’s passive wireless temperature monitoring white paper explains how RFID / energy-harvesting temperature sensors deliver node-level real-time temperature sensing – no outage, no cabling, no maintenance – for switchgear contacts, cable terminations, busbars and transformer bodies.

Technology and products

  • Range -40 to +150 C, accuracy +/- 1 C; passive RFID / inductive energy harvesting – no battery or external supply
  • Wireless communication (RFID / 433 MHz / 2.4G) via temperature data collector; no temperature cables
  • Design life > 10 years – meets and exceeds the >= 10-year grid requirement (Q/GDW 1535-2015 / DL/T 1498)
  • Mounting: tuning-fork / buckle / clip / nut / clamp / lashing types for contacts, cable heads, busbars, bushings and leads
  • Edge: temperature data collector + IoT concentrator HMJ1020-WJ (LoRa + RS485 + Ethernet downlink; Ethernet + fibre + 4G uplink; IEC 61850)

Fusion diagnosis

Temperature data fuses with PD, arrester and SF6 data on the intelligent condition monitoring platform. A switchgear monitored for both temperature and PD can distinguish “pure overheating” from “discharge with overheating”, significantly improving defect classification accuracy.
